Active Release Technique
Active Release Technique (A.R.T.) is referred to as the gold standard of soft tissue treatment. A.R.T. is widely used by professional teams and athletes focusing on increasing muscle movement, range of motion, and breaking up scar tissue. It is a hands on treatment and case-management system that allows the practitioner to diagnose and treat soft-tissue injuries.
Why Active Release Technique?
There are over 500 specific moves that make up the treatment protocol allowing each practitioner to tailor treatment to the unique needs of each patient. Individuals who benefit from this treatment include:
- Members of the athletic community, both recreational and professional.
- Repetitive motion injuries
- Car accident injuries
- Chronic pain patients with symptoms mimicking an overuse syndrome
- Anyone who has not been able to find relief through conventional therapies
How Does ART Help?
The basic premise of the technique is that scar tissue, or adhesions are formed with overuse activity or single traumatic injuries. With overusing a muscle, a lack of oxygen is created which attract fibroblastic cells that lay down scar tissue. With single traumatic injuries, or surgical sites they can also produce scar tissue, due to the lack or tissue regeneration ability.
Scar tissue restricts the normal function of tissue. Such as movement, contraction, relaxation that are needed for optimal function. When optimal function is retarded through stability or mobility, dysfunction will arise and pain will follow. Getting the Active Release Technique performed at our office will give you results. After the first treatment, you will usually notice improved motion with less pain. Therapeutic exercises are typically prescribed to maintain your gains.
