Whiplash and Chronic Neck Pain

An anatomical diagram showing the effects of whiplash in the cervical spine

Here’s something we hear all the time: “Well, the neck pain all started after I got whiplash in 2002”. And the research bears this statement out. Chronic neck pain secondary to whiplash, especially untreated whiplash, is a real problem. This is why we are so adamant that people have PIP coverage. Consistent care is critical to helping reduce the chances of chronic neck pain. Not everyone can escape the chronic neck problems that often come along with the accident, but we can do our best.

Here are some clues that the injury should be looked at sooner than later.

Clue #1: It’s been at least 2-3 weeks, and the pain still has not resolved.

Realistically, if it is just a minor fender bender, and all you got was some neck soreness and a reconfigured bumper, you’ll probably be OK. In a few weeks, things will probably feel close to normal.  Symptoms that include persistent headache, loss of motion, and constant neck pain, warrant further attention.

#2: You can’t function like normal

This is typically one of the biggest clues. If you find yourself struggling to focus at work, check your blind spot, or perform normal daily life, it’s time to get evaluated. Mild pain that slowly resolves over a few weeks is one thing. Consistent pain and loss of function is another. At that point, it’s time to get evaluated for a whiplash injury before it becomes a more persistent issue.  The other thing to remember is that you may have had a concussion, which brings us to point #3.

#3: You hit your head or have persistent headaches

Contrary to popular belief, you can have a concussion without hitting your head. During a whiplash event, neurons can get injured and when that happens, all sorts of symptoms can arise. These can include dizziness, nausea, short-term memory loss, irritability, and of course, headaches. This is another sign you need to get evaluated as soon as possible.

Hope this helps,

Cheers,
